Aquarium Plants Sydney

VI SYDNEY SHRIMPS-NANO-AQUARIUM-PLANTS-FERTLISER-PARRAMATTA

One of the most common questions we get from Sydney hobbyists is: “Which aquarium plants will actually survive in my tank?” It’s a fair question — not all plants sold in aquarium shops are suited to Sydney’s water, and many beginners end up frustrated when their plants melt, yellow, or simply refuse to grow.

After 15 years of running planted aquariums in Western Sydney, here are our recommendations for plants that genuinely thrive in Sydney water conditions.

Understanding Sydney Water for Planted Tanks

Sydney tap water is moderately alkaline (typically pH 7.0–7.8) with moderate hardness. This suits a wide range of plants — unlike very soft or very hard water regions, Sydney hobbyists actually have it reasonably good for planted tanks.

The main challenges Sydney hobbyists face are:

  • Chlorine and chloramine in tap water (use a dechlorinator like Seachem Prime before adding to your tank)
  • Variable parameters depending on your suburb and the time of year
  • Lack of CO2 in the water (most tap water is CO2-deficient, which limits plant growth)

The good news: many excellent aquarium plants don’t require CO2 injection and will thrive in Sydney tap water with the right fertiliser program.

Best Beginner Plants for Sydney Tanks

Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri)

Java moss is virtually indestructible and one of the best plants you can put in a Sydney aquarium. It tolerates a wide range of pH and hardness, grows in low light, and needs no CO2. It’s also beloved by shrimp — Crystal Red Shrimp and Cherry Shrimp love grazing on the biofilm that develops on java moss.

Care level: Very easy
Light: Low to medium
CO2: Not required
Best for: Shrimp tanks, beginner tanks, driftwood attachment

Anubias (Anubias barteri and varieties)

Anubias are slow-growing, extremely hardy plants that thrive in Sydney conditions. They’re one of the few plants that genuinely prefer low light — bright light actually encourages algae growth on their leaves. Attach them to driftwood or rock rather than planting in substrate (burying the rhizome causes rot).

Care level: Very easy
Light: Low to medium
CO2: Not required
Best for: Low-tech tanks, attaching to hardscape

Ambulia (Limnophila sessiliflora)

Ambulia is a fast-growing stem plant that works beautifully as a background plant in Sydney tanks. It’s one of the best natural nitrate reducers you can grow, helping keep your water clean. Under good light it grows quickly and produces delicate feathery foliage.

Care level: Easy
Light: Medium to high
CO2: Not required, but benefits from it
Best for: Background planting, nitrate reduction

Cryptocoryne (Crypt varieties)

Crypts are classic aquarium plants for a reason — they’re adaptable, grow in low light, and develop beautiful colour under the right conditions. They can undergo “crypt melt” when first introduced (leaves melt away), but the plant almost always recovers and comes back stronger. Sydney water suits most crypt varieties very well.

Care level: Easy (patient required during establishment)
Light: Low to medium
CO2: Not required
Best for: Midground planting, shrimp tanks

Christmas Moss (Vesicularia montagnei)

Similar to Java moss but with a distinctive Christmas tree branch pattern, Christmas moss is particularly popular in aquascaping. It attaches readily to driftwood and rock, and like java moss it’s a favourite grazing ground for shrimp.

Care level: Easy
Light: Low to medium
CO2: Not required
Best for: Aquascaping, shrimp tanks

Intermediate Plants for Sydney Tanks

Rotala (Rotala rotundifolia and varieties)

Rotala is a stunning stem plant that produces pink to red colouration under good light. It grows readily in Sydney water with a quality fertiliser program and benefits greatly from CO2 injection. Trim regularly and replant the tops to create dense, bushy growth.

Care level: Intermediate
Light: Medium to high
CO2: Beneficial
Best for: Background, colour accent

Bucephalandra (Buce)

Bucephalandra has become one of the most popular aquascaping plants in recent years, and for good reason — the variety of leaf shapes, sizes, and colours is extraordinary, and it’s genuinely easy to keep. Like Anubias, attach it to hardscape rather than planting in substrate.

Care level: Easy to intermediate
Light: Low to medium
CO2: Not required
Best for: Aquascaping, foreground and midground accent

Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum)

Hornwort is one of the fastest-growing aquarium plants available and an exceptional nitrate absorber. It can be planted or left floating. For Sydney hobbyists with fish-only tanks or shrimp tanks, hornwort is a practical and effective choice for water quality management.

Care level: Very easy
Light: Medium
CO2: Not required
Best for: Nitrate control, fast growth, shrimp cover

The Role of Fertilisers in Sydney Planted Tanks

Even in Sydney’s reasonably well-mineralised tap water, aquarium plants benefit significantly from a dedicated fertiliser program. The key nutrients your plants need that are typically absent or depleted in aquarium water are:

  • Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) — macronutrients for growth
  • Potassium (K) — essential for cellular function
  • Iron (Fe) — critical for green colouration; deficiency causes yellowing
  • Trace elements — boron, manganese, zinc, and others in small quantities

At VI Sydney Shrimps we’ve developed our own all-in-one aquarium fertiliser range specifically formulated for Sydney water conditions — addressing the specific deficiencies we’ve observed over 15 years of planted tank keeping in Western Sydney.
