Aquarium Plant Success: Your Questions Answered
Growing a lush, vibrant underwater garden is a rewarding journey, but it requires the right balance of light, nutrition, and stability. At our Sydney studio, we believe that success starts with the right knowledge. We’ve compiled the most common questions from the hobbyist community to help you maintain a thriving planted aquarium.
How long should I leave my aquarium lights on?
For most planted setups, we recommend a consistent photoperiod of 8 hours per day. Lighting is the engine that drives plant growth, but it must be balanced with nutrition to prevent algae from taking over.
Consistency is Key: Using a simple timer ensures your plants receive a stable “day” and “night” cycle, which is vital for their long-term health.
The “Indirect Sunlight” Factor: Many hobbyists forget that ambient light from a nearby window counts. Indirect sunlight is still functional light for plants and algae; if your tank is in a bright room, you may need to reduce your LED timer to 6 or 7 hours to compensate.
Controlling the Environment: If you notice algae appearing on the glass or leaves, it’s often a sign that the light is on for too long or is too intense for the current nutrient levels in the water.
Why are my aquarium plants melting?
“Melting” is a common term for when aquatic plants turn translucent, yellow, or lose their leaves shortly after being added to a new tank. While it can be alarming, it is often a natural biological process—provided the right conditions are met for recovery.
The Acclimation Phase: Most aquarium plants are grown “emersed” (out of water) in nurseries. When moved “submersed” into your tank, they must shed their old leaves and grow new ones adapted to underwater life.
Water Stability: Consistency is more important than “perfect” numbers. Sudden shifts in pH, temperature, or hardness can trigger a melt. Establishing a regular, scheduled water change routine helps maintain the stable environment plants need to recover and thrive.
The Role of Specialised Nutrition: A melting plant is under significant biological stress. Without a readily available source of “food,” it simply won’t have the energy required to grow the new submersed leaves needed to survive. This is where our customised All-in-One Aquarium Fertiliser becomes essential. Developed and tested in our Sydney studio, our formula provides the immediate micro and macronutrients required to fuel this transition. By dosing regularly during the first few weeks, you give your plants the best possible chance to bounce back with stronger, more vibrant growth.
Light and Flow: Ensure your light is on for the recommended 8 hours and that there is enough water movement to carry nutrients directly to the leaves.
Do I need CO2 for my aquarium plants?
The short answer is: It depends on your goals. While CO2 is a powerful “turbo boost” for growth, it isn’t a strict requirement for every beautiful aquascape.
Green Plants & Low-Tech Setups: Most hardy green species—such as Anubias, Java Fern, and many Cryptocoryne—can grow beautifully without CO2 injection. For these “low-tech” tanks, providing the right amount of light for 8 hours and consistent dosing with our All-in-One Aquarium Fertiliser is more than enough to maintain lush, healthy growth.
The “Vibrancy” Factor for Red Plants: If you are looking to achieve those deep, striking reds and vibrant pinks seen in high-end aquascapes, CO2 becomes highly recommended. Carbon is the primary building block for plants; adding it allows species like Rotala or Ludwigia to grow faster and develop the intense pigmentation that makes a tank truly pop.
Balanced Growth: Even with CO2, plants still need “food.” Carbon alone won’t create a healthy tank. Our signature fertiliser ensures that whether you use CO2 or not, your plants have the full spectrum of micro and macronutrients required to stay strong and algae-free.
